Keegan Bradley WINS the PGA Grand Slam of Golf
Srixon Cleveland Golf staff player and 2011 USPGA champion Keegan Bradley took the honours at the Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda, seeing off stiff competition from fellow 2011 majors champions Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy, and Darren Clarke.
Bradley went into round two of the 36 hole event tied for the lead with McIlroy at 4 under par. With Schwartzel teeing off 4 shots back at level par and Clarke a further 6 shots adrift, the final day was looking like a two horse race.
It was not to be, with McIlroy leading after six holes he was on course for a comfortable win but 3 bogeys in a row put him out of the running and he never came back. Meanwhile, with Darren Clarke out of contention and Keegan Bradley dropping 3 shots in the first six holes, Charl Schwartzel was on a charge, holing a 30 footer at the 5th for the first of 5 birdies on the bounce.
But Bradley fought back – a birdie at 10 put him 1 shot ahead and whilst the pair battled it out to the last with Schwartzel going on to card a course record equalling 65 in the incredibly windy conditions, it was not enough and Bradley never lost that 1 shot advantage. Holing a nervy 5 footer at the 18th was enough to give Bradley a level par 71 and take the title of 'Champion of Champions'.
"It feels great. It was a lot more intense than I thought it was going to be," Bradley said. "Maybe because of the players that were here. I'm sure everybody wanted to win it.
"And coming down the stretch, it felt like any other tournament that I played in. It was very, very intense, and I was nervous over that five-footer to win."
Sadly, Darren Clarke never quite found his game and finished the event at 9 over par. He did however comment that "it was shame I played so poorly this week – but I am looking forward to a very bad hangover in the morning".
